St Edmund’s College Canberra – the School of ‘Wallabies’ and Young Christian Gentlemen.

St Edmund’s has built a reputation as one of the premier Rugby Schools in Australia.

The College has produced both State and Wallaby representatives. They include Canberra’s favourite rugby son George Gregan, Dave Grimmond, Matthew Pini, Mark McInnes, Ricky Stuart and Matt Giteau, our newest Wallaby.

The College has won the Waratah Shield, the most prestigious schoolboy knockout competition in New South Wales for six successive years and has produced 47 Australian Schoolboy players.

St Edmund’s College Canberra is a Catholic independent school for boys from year 4 (9 year olds) to year 12. Established in 1954 by the Christian Brothers it was the first Catholic Boys School in Canberra, the National Capital of Australia.

The College, surrounded by splendid playing fields and grounds is situated in leafy inner city Manuka, has an enrolment of over 1200 students and is one of 35 Christian Brothers’ schools in Australia and part of a world wide network.

The first Christian Brothers school was established in Waterford, Ireland in 1802 by Edmund Rice, a successful businessman who turned his talent, passion and finances to the education of boys.

St Edmund’s College carries on the Founder’s aspirations to educate and nurture the whole person in a community of support addressing the academic, spiritual, artistic, physical and social development of students.

The primary school is on the same site, fully integrated into the whole College and adhering to the concept of continuity and a stable community in which the students can learn and develop.

The College offers students a transition into the secondary school. The Middle School (Year 7) provides the boys with home room teachers for the core subjects. This methodology eases the boys into the secondary school by combining aspects of Primary education and secondary school educational structures. It is designed to meet the developmental needs of young adolescents.

In the Secondary College, students can study core subjects – Religious Education, English and Mathematics plus elective subjects, as diverse as Drama, Music, Information Technology, Food Science, Japanese, Hospitality and a Social Justice programme unique to St Edmund’s College.

This Social Justice programme aims to develop in our students their capacity to become men able to make a positive difference in our world. With this programme and the religious formation faculty, students can be involved with and become a part of the Youth Ministry, making a difference in their community and developing their sense of self and social responsibility.

The College has a strong history of sporting success and a growing reputation for Performing Arts, nurtured by the rich art and musical environment of the National Capital.

The College has, over the last ten years, progressively upgraded facilities. The Senior Student Centre, opened in 2003, is a new concept in educational facilities for Year 11 and 12. It provides senior students with teaching, studying, research facilities along with a common room for social gatherings and communal activities. The Centre has Year 11 and 12 Co-ordinators with offices within the facility and available to the students. The Centre has a Manager directly involved in all aspects of the students College life and their development.

The College believes that education is a collaborative process, which acknowledges the role of parents as prime educators of their children. The Headmaster, Mr Colin Dwyer, invites any enquiries from interested parents on 61 2 6239 0660,or through our website: www.stedmunds.act.edu.au
