Rockhampton
Region
The Rockhampton region, heart of Central Queensland, is
poised for an era of economic growth with existing administrative and
commercial infrastructure and as the logical location for the development
of value added export opportunities. The range of opportunities, proximity
of major markets and lower cost structures are key factors in generating
this expansion. The region is amongst a select few nationally that offer
significant greenfield development opportunities in resource, industrial
and agricultural development.
Economic opportunities presented by the region are arguably
unparalled in Australia – with a combination of 300,000 mega litres
of unallocated water available for diversion in the Fitzroy Basin, a strategic
industrial development site just 20 kilometres from Rockhampton, strategic
transport infrastructure, in excess of 50% of Queensland’s electricity
generation capacity and good quality agricultural land.
The Rockhampton region is an integral part of a minerals
processing and light metals industry cluster. The region is attractive
for associated and downstream industries. The Queensland Government strongly
supports investment in the mining, processing and refining of minerals
– industries for which the Rockhampton region infrastructure provides
a cost competitive advantage.
With potential increases in food production from the region,
opportunities also emerge in growth of the region’s logistics, food
processing and manufacturing sectors.
Rockhampton’s Airport is conveniently located on the
edge of the city and, with its modern air terminal, not only expedites
local and interstate business and tourist travel but also has the capacity
for international flights. The Rockhampton airstrip has been extended
to handle B747, A300 and B767 aircraft, facilitating large military and
charter aircraft that service exercises at Shoalwater Bay Military Training
Area and a potential tourist charter industry.
Providing excellent and comprehensive educational facilities
ranging from kindergarten to doctoral level, the Rockhampton region also
has extensive child/day care facilities, schools for special education
needs, support centres, open learning centres, remote area learning programs
– all well serviced by university and state, catholic and private
schools.
The quality of lifestyle and location attracts skilled workers
to the area. Attractions include the Great Keppel Island, Fitzroy River,
Rockhampton Botanic Gardens, Cliff Kershaw Botanic Gardens, Mount Archer
National Park, Mount Morgan Experience, Capricorn Coast and Corio Bay
wetlands.
