St
Joseph's Nudgee College
St Joseph's Nudgee College has created an environment to
nurture the highest qualities in our youth for 112 years. The result is
a modern academic performance as envied as its sporting heritage.
Since the beginning, ‘Blue, White, Blue’, the
stirring cry of 1400 students has echoed across Ross Oval as the Nudgee
College 1st XV appears. This scene has been reenacted a myriad of times
during the College’s history, ever since John Lonergan (Jundah)
led the first Rugby team onto a football field in 1892.
Since those years, Nudgee Rugby has been known for its skill,
fierce competitiveness and success, winning thirty-six GPS Premierships
since 1918 (war years being excluded) when the GPS competition began.
Over that time, Nudgee’s famous colours of blue and white became
synonymous with the network of Brothers’ Union and League teams
throughout Queensland.
In 1892 Jerry Durack, a gifted young man, was sent to Nudgee
for his chance at education. One wonders at the value placed on that opportunity
when a young boy was sent from the ‘Grass Castles’ of the
Kimberleys of Western Australia to Nudgee College in Brisbane.
In 1899 he graduated in Arts with First Class Honours in
maths and physics. This was Sydney University’s first Double First.
In 1900 Jerry was granted a Queen Victoria Traveling Scholarship to England
for research in physics. He published papers on radioactivity which were
“specially recognized” by Cambridge University. In 1904 he
was appointed Lecturer in Physics in London.
In 1896 student Hugh Macrossan, Nudgee’s first Rhodes
Scholar, won the University Exhibition medal going on to become a Chief
Justice of Queensland.
Doctor Harry Windsor, 1st XV 1932, was Australia’s
first heart transplant surgeon and his illustrious pupil was Dr. Victor
Chang.
Chief Justice Sir Dormer Andrews, student 1932, 457 Squadron
RAAF represents all Nudgee young men who fought in the World Wars.
Archbishop John Bathersby D.D. Nudgee student 1953, is Archbishop
of Brisbane, Dr. Mark Loane Nudgee student 1969, Australian Wallaby Captain.
Paul McLean Nudgee student 1971, Australian Wallaby Captain.
Among Rugby Internationals are included John Doneley, John
O’Neill, Kevin Ryan, Dallas O’Neill, Mick Purcell, Duncan
Hall, Ross Hanley, Tony D’Arcy, Glenn Panoho, and Elton Flatley.
Doctors and Flight Lieutenants Steven Cook and Steven Frederikson
who served with the United Nations Medical Corps in Dili were Nudgee students
in 1987 and 1990 respectively.
Michael Hyland, Nudgee student in 1997, at 22, is Head Stockman
on Alexandria Station.
Stephen Daley, Nudgee student in 1994, is a veterinary scientist
and Rhodes Scholar in 2002.
Scott Buchanan, 17, year 12 student at Nudgee College, competed
at the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra in January 2003 and will
represent Australia in the International Youth Science Forum in London
in July.
Nudgee College, to this day, embraces an ethos that offers
all who go there, their ‘chance’.
Nudgee has enshrined the notion of a 'balanced education'
of the whole person through mutual respect, compassion, loyalty and a
strong sense of community.
