The Origin of Shangri-La

The name Shangri-La was inspired by James Hilton’s legendary novel Lost Horizon. It is the story about the human quest for happiness and its consummation that took place at a secret location in the heart of Asia.

After a plane crash, four survivors are taken by a mysterious ageless Chinese man up a mystical mountain to an ancient lamasery where they enjoy all that is good in life. There they discover the ultimate secret of Shangri-La, longevity for all who live there.

Today, Shangri-La stands as a synonym for paradise. Though mythical in origin the name perfectly encapsulates the genuine serenity and service for which Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts have come to be recognised. Its modern and sophisticated ‘S’ logo not only resembles uniquely Asian architectural forms but it is also reminiscent of majestic mountains reflected in the waters of a tranquil lake. The story of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts began in 1971 when a deluxe hotel was founded in the city of Singapore. Today, the Hong Kong based chain is the largest Asian based deluxe hotel group in the region. It is regarded as one of the world’s finest hotel management companies, garnering international awards and recognition from prestigious publications and industry partners.

It comprises of 45 deluxe hotels and resorts in key cities of Asia and the Middle East and in the most sought after leisure destinations. This represents an inventory of over 21,000 rooms. Seven properties are Traders Hotels, its sister brand established in 1989 to deliver high value, mid-range, quality accommodation to the business traveller. In addition, there are over 20 projects under development including locations in Canada, Mainland China, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Oman, Qatar, Thailand.
