Language Schools

English opens doors to a wide range of study options, as well as a wide range of international careers. Australia offers students high-quality English language training in an English-speaking country, with all the advantages of Australia’s legendary lifestyle.

Australia’s language schools are able to provide a wide variety of training, from short courses to improve your English language skills while visiting Australia as part of a holiday, to formal courses in preparation for accredited levels of English recognised by education and immigration authorities around the world. Students from more than 100 countries come to Australia to learn English for study, work, travel or personal reasons.

English language training in Australia is provided by specialised institutions. A national accreditation body (see below) sets standards for class sizes and teacher qualifications, teaching methods and the curriculum. It also requires that staff assist students in finding accommodation, including home-stays, and provide advice on further studies.

A language holiday

Many international students, and particularly Japanese students, choose to study English as part of a holiday, excursion or exchange program in Australia.

With the wide variety of courses available, visitors on a tourist visa can choose to study English for just part of their trip, or to base an entire holiday around a longer course.

ELICOS courses lasting less than three months do not require students to have a student visa.

This informal English language training can offer great flexibility, with courses tailor-made for individuals or groups. And the choice of locations is even greater than the variety of courses – learn in the heart of an Australian city, an outback town, or one of the country’s stunning beach locations.

Some students choose home-stay accommodation, living with an English-speaking host family and gaining valuable experience of Australian culture.

Home-stays are a popular option for accommodation with students under-taking English language training. Living with a host family provides valuable opportunities for conversation; students can correct their mistakes and learn more quickly.

Orientation

All English language institutions provide an orientation program on arrival. They organise social and cultural activities, and have counsellors available to assist with any personal concerns of students.

Australia’s English language institutions cater for all standards, from beginner to advanced. The wide variety of specialist courses means there is a course to suit the needs and interests of every student.

Course accreditation

English language training in Australia is provided by ELICOS institutions. ELICOS stands for English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students.

The National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) is Australia’s official English language training accreditation system, internationally renowned as world’s best practice in regulation and quality assurance of English language tuition. Many other countries have sought to emulate Australia’s NEAS system.

Under NEAS, private and publicly funded institutions must meet the same rigorous standards for class sizes, the professional qualifications of teachers, curriculum, teaching methods and materials.

In addition, all private colleges in Australia must subscribe to a Tuition Assurance Scheme that guarantees students will be provided with the tuition for which they have enrolled.

‘Study in Australia’ website

The ‘Study in Australia’ website is the official Australian Government website for advice on study in Australia.

It provides impartial and reliable information about courses, educational institutions, study and living costs, the application process, visa requirements and more.

The website also features a ‘Study Wizard’ which can guide you through all the steps of selecting courses and enrolling to study in Australia.
