Learning together – Australia’s language courses are particularly popular
Australia's World-Class Education
As Australia and Japan have increased their familiarity with each other’s society and culture over recent decades, our bilateral relationship – founded on shared national interests – has strengthened and deepened. Moreover, Australia’s educational arrangements with Japan have continued to ensure the Australia-Japan relationship remains strong.
An attractive, welcoming destination for prospective students, Australia has the largest proportion of international tertiary students per head of university student population (12.6%) among all major competitors.
In addition to more than 33,000 Japanese enrolments in Australian institutions in 2003, Australia is also the most popular destination for Japanese school trips (shugaku ryoko) – ahead of both the US and UK. In 2003 some 24,000 students participated in such programs. In addition, more than 11,000 school students travel to Australia each year on short or long-term study or school exchange programs.
This interest in Japanese culture and education is reciprocated by Australian students, with approximately 2000 school-age Australians visiting Japan on exchange programs up to 12 months in length in the year 2000. This is more than the number of American students who visit Japan in the same capacity, despite Australia’s relatively small population.
