Northern Territory
The people of the Northern Territory are delighted to be part of the Australia World Expo 2005 Aichi. There can be few areas in the world better poised to realise their economic potential than that of Australia’s Northern Territory.
Japan and the Northern Territory
Already, the Territory exports more than A$200m of goods annually to Japan – our fourth largest trading partner. That figure is set to rise dramatically. During the past 12 months, several large projects have been completed that herald a new era of development and trade opportunities.
New connections
The recent opening of the Adelaide-to-Darwin railway means Darwin is now established as the gateway of a transcontinental trade route between Asia and south-eastern Australia.
The rail line is a major boost for the Port of Darwin, located on a vast natural harbour many times the size of Sydney Harbour, encompassing an area of some 1000 square kilometres. Our new A$200m deep-water port at East Arm Wharf is operating with shipping services between Darwin and Asian ports, and a A$50m bulk-fuel terminal is being constructed.
Clean reliable energy
Construction of the A$1.6bn Conoco-Phillips Darwin LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) Plant is under way and expected to be completed by 2006.
This plant will process LNG – sourced from the Bayu-Undan field in the Timor Sea via a 500km pipeline – destined for export to Japan for electricity generation.
In addition, Alcan Gove is embarking on a multi-million-dollar expansion of its alumina refinery, expected to extend the life of this world-class facility for another 50 years.
Tourism growth
However, the Northern Territory is also a destination famous for its natural wonders, prolific wildlife, and rich Indigenous culture stretching back to ancient times. Despite our relatively small population of 200,000, the Northern Territory is one of the most culturally diverse communities in Australia, comprising more than 70 ethnic and community groups.
