Australia
G day'
Pacific neighbours linked by geography, technology and trade
From high above the vast Pacific Ocean, Australia and Japan stand like 'Koma inu' temple guardians, straddling opposite ends of the 140th Meridian. They look as though they have little in common. Australia is a vast land mass - 22 times the size of Japan. Conversely, Japan has a great population, and Australia a modest 19 million people. Japanese say "Konnichi-wa", Australians "G`day".
Yet the two countries are linked by more than just the waters of the Pacific Ocean. A long history of stable and mutually complementary trade has laid the foundation for a very strong regional partnership. Our Governments share common interests in world affairs, security and stability. Tourism, education and cultural exchange have brought Australians and Japanese closer together.
Australia's great land, its rare nature and relaxed, friendly lifestyle have long persuaded Japanese visitors to head Down Under.
In the business sector, Japanese companies are major investors in Australia, recognising our skilled workforce and investment-friendly environment. Australian companies supply world-class products and services to Japanese consumers, and produce clean, sustainable inputs and resources for Japanese manufacturers.
