THIS IS AUSTRALIAN RICE
Former Japanese parliamentarian Isaburo (Jo) Takasuka first planted rice in Australia in 1905, using 15 bags of Japonica rice seed brought with him from Japan. In 1914, Jo grew Australia’s first successful commercial rice crop.
One hundred years later, more than 2,000 rice farmers in Australia supply their company, SunRice, with an annual average of 1.2 million tonnes of rice to mill and market to more than 70 countries around the world.
SunRice has been exporting to Japan for 10 years. Other major customers include Taiwan, the Middle East, North America, South East Asia and the Pacific.
We are Australia’s largest exporter of processed branded food products and the fifth largest rice food company in the world.
SunRice is one of Australia’s most successful vertically integrated agri-businesses, capable of guaranteeing quality and safety of product from paddock to plate.
We provide the seed to our growers, and manage all storage and milling facilities through to final product packaging.
We operate three modern rice milling facilities and have HACCP and individual customer quality accreditation.
Thanks to a unique farm rotation system utilising natural biological controls, chemical usage on rice in Australia is the lowest in the developed world.
The rice industry is the first Australian agricultural industry to initiate a regional biodiversity plan and a greenhouse reduction strategy.
Being located in the southern hemisphere Australia’s harvest runs from March to May, counter-seasonal to Japan and other northern hemisphere rice producers.
Australia grows premium, short grain rice varieties including Koshihikari and our own variety, Opus. We also grow several medium grain Japonica varieties.
