Established in 1954, St. Mary’s International School’s day program is operated by the Brothers of Christian Instruction of Ploermel. Originally founded to provide an education for Catholic boys, today the school welcomes boys of all faiths and nationalities. The American-style curriculum is followed from Pre-First through Grade 12 and the option of working towards the International Baccalaureate (IB) is given to students in Grade 11 and 12.
Students from Pre-First through Grade 6 are taught English, math, science, social studies and religion by the homeroom teachers. In addition, specialist teachers are provided for art, physical education, swimming, vocal and instrumental music, computers, library and Japanese language.
Grades 7 and 8 are departmentalized with all students required to study English, math, science, foreign language (French, Japanese), religion (Catholic and Ethics), social studies and geography. The High School college-preparatory program features advanced courses in English, mathematics, sciences, computer science and Asian studies. These basic offerings are supplemented with a variety of electives that include languages, music, art, etc. Successful completion of the IB program enables graduates to enter European or U.S. universities and obtain advanced standing in many U.S. colleges.
Swimming, tennis, ice hockey, soccer, track and field, wrestling, baseball and basketball are but a few of the athletic opportunities available. Boys also participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities including photography, intramurals, student government and publications, concert and stage bands, speech and debate. The school conducts a multi-national carnival in May which has become famous throughout Tokyo.
St. Mary’s International School is located on a seven-acre site in Tokyo’s largest residential area. The school aims “to educate boys to be lifelong learners of good character who demonstrate academic, physical, artistic and moral excellence, respect for religious and cultural beliefs and responsibility as international citizens.”
