IHBI is Australia's premier interdisciplinary research organisation. IHBI has created a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment by integrating the research strengths of QUT's Health, Science and Built Environment and Engineering Faculties in a progressive $55m building under construction in Brisbane's Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

IHBI is a new model of a research enterprise which integrates existing OUT strengths in advanced diagnostics and medical devices; injury prevention and rehabilitation; molecular farming; health development; tissue bio-regeneration; and vision improvement. A strong foundation of interdisciplinary research already exists in areas such as; health care delivery projects which incorporate engineers, biotechnologists and nursing researchers; and crop science projects involving plant molecular biologists and public health experts.

IHBI's vision is to create an open, collaborative environment fostering real biomedical and health innovation and excellence. By promoting interdisciplinary research IHBI will capture the unique opportunities that arise from teams working at the interfaces between traditional research fields. IHBI is focused on contributing to the real world through economic development and commercialisation by the strategic partnerships; and improving health care with evidence-based research inputs into government policy and health management practices. QUT already has one of Australia's longest records of success in building sustainable biotechnology spin-off companies. Existing programs such as motor vehicle accident research and public health have made major contributions to the community.
