Australia is a world leader in delivery of international education services. Australia is the preferred choice for international students from many countries and the third most popular English speaking international study destination. Australia is an attractive and welcoming destination for prospective students and Australia now has the largest proportion of international tertiary students per head of university student population (12.6 per cent), compared with our major competitors.

The Australian Government values the contribution made to Australia’s campuses, schools and communities, by the 19,000 Japanese students who travel to our shores each year to study full time at an Australian educational institution. In addition to the 19,000 full time students, an estimated 45,000 are studying a short course or visiting on a school excursion or school program. In recognition of this, the Australian Government will be hosting an Education Week during the Aichi World Expo 2005 from 6 to 10 June 2004.

The Aichi World Expo is an ideal event for Australia to showcase the key sectors in the Australian education industry. These sectors are:

• higher education
• vocational education and training
• schools and
• English language studies.

Education Week will provide an opportunity to engage with key Japanese stakeholders and share Australia’s unique learning style, one that encourages innovative, creative and independent thinking. It will also be an opportunity to present Australia as an innovative and technologically advanced nation. General features of Australia’s education system, including its structure, quality assurance and approach to curriculum will be highlighted, as well as sector specific topics. Australian and Japanese industry representatives will have the opportunity to develop networks and exchange ideas.
