2005 Nobel Prize for Medicine
The Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded in 2005 to UWA Professor Barry Marshall (a UWA graduate) and Emeritus Professor Robin Warren for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
2005 Australian Life Scientist of the Year
Also in 2005, the Australian Life Scientist of the Year was Professor Harvey Millar, a Professorial Fellow within UWA’s Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences.?
Links with China
In May 2005, UWA was honoured to be selected by the PRC Ministry of Education, National Office for Chinese as a Foreign Language, as the location for Australia’s first Confucius Institute to promote Chinese language, culture and bilateral links.? The Institute is a joint venture between the University and NOCFL, in partnership with Zhejiang University.
The University of Western Australia has a wide range of collaborative agreements with institutions in China in many disciplines, including several student and teacher exchanges.?
In addition, major industrial partnerships between China and Western Australia in the resource development sector (such as the Australian Liquid Natural Gas supply contract, worth some $25 billion), have enabled the University to strengthen its relations in this area through the training of Chinese Managers from this sector (in conjunction with Curtin University of Technology).
