The Australia China Business Council (ACBC) has promoted the healthy and growing trade relationship between Australia and China throughout the Council’s history. With each passing year, strong economic growth in China is presenting Australian business with robust opportunities for long-term growth. The agreement to launch negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Australia and China, signed by Prime Minister John Howard and Premier Wen Jiabao on 18 April 2005, displays the intent of leaders from both countries to pursue the benefits of closer integration.

For Australia, the importance of China is beyond doubt. China is Australia’s third-largest merchandise trading partner, with growth in merchandise trade of almost 20% per annum. China is Australia’s fastest growing market for education and tourism. With almost 70,000 Chinese nationals studying in Australia, the only restriction on growth in this sector is the capacities of our educational institutions to meet the needs of these important students. At the current growth rate in the tourism sector, by 2014, 1.2 million Chinese visitors to Australia will be injecting A$1.6bn into the Australian economy annually. If a Free Trade Agreement is implemented in 2006, Australia could expect a rise in real GDP of US$18bn by 2015.

Despite having a much larger economy, China can look forward to extensive gains from increased integration with Australia, particularly in the areas of services and agriculture. Australia currently stands as China’s ninth largest merchandise trading partner. The benefits to China of implementing a comprehensive FTA soon, are substantial. If applied in 2006, China could expect a growth in real GDP of US$64bn (RMB529.7bn) by 2015.

Against this background of continuous growth, the Australia China Business Council is pleased to be Australia’s premier organisation for the promotion of business links between Australia and China. Our five state branches provide an accurate and timely supply of information and events for all industries focusing on China.

With the Olympics in Beijing in 2008 and the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, there will be extensive opportunities for Australian and Chinese business to create lasting commercial partnerships. On behalf of the Australia China Business Council, I am pleased to congratulate the publishers of this fine book on helping business organisations in both Australia and China become better acquainted.
