Over the last decade the world has watched China blossom as a major contributor to global economic growth. At the same time, Australia’s links with China have strengthened considerably, and China is now one of Australia’s top three trading partners.
China’s rapid growth has obviously created significant energy and resource demand. The Chinese Government estimates that China’s energy demand will double from 2000 to 2020. China will need to secure longterm energy supplies from stable, reliable energy producers. Australia is ideally placed to meet the burgeoning energy and commodity demands of China, and support the country’s ongoing industrialisation and development.
Australia has the opportunity to build an energy freeway from Australia to China. We will become the first country to supply LNG to China from April 2006, with a 25 year contract for 180 billion cubic feet (3.7 million tonnes) of LNG per year to Guangdong province.
Not only does Australia have the resources, but we are a stable country with a proven track record of secure, reliable supply. Australian business also has a lot to offer China in skills and expertise.
The Chinese Government is actively encouraging outward investment, and Australia, already a preferred investment destination for Chinese investors, is well positioned to receive a greater share of that flow.
In the past Chinese investment has been made in Australia’s manufacturing, mining, mineral processing, leather processing, wool processing and agribusiness industries. However, opportunities continue to unfold in the biotechnology; information and communications technology; nanotechnology; and financial services sectors.
Chinese companies have discovered that by leveraging Australia’s strong research and development capabilities, the ‘developed-in- Australia’ tag brings prestige and solid returns to Chinese businesses setting up in Australia.
