Iam delighted to see the successful publication of China Australia Business, and would like to convey my sincerest gratitude to the editorial team.
The launch of this publication heralds a new era of comprehensive cooperation in Sino-Australian relationships. With President Hu Jintao’s successful Australian visit in 2003, China and Australia embarked on a relationship of allround cooperation that features a high degree of mutual trust, longterm friendship, and mutual benefit, a relationship that makes two peoples both winners. In May last year (2005), Mr Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee, made another successful visit to Australia, bringing Sino-Australian relationships to new heights.
With the deepening of Sino-Australian ties, trade volumes between the two countries have risen dramatically. In the last 10 years, Sino-Australian trade has quadrupled, reaching US$26bn in 2005. China is now Australia’s second largest trading partner, while Australia ranks ninth among China’s trading partners. Both countries have developed extensive cooperation in agricultural, energy, mining, textile, environmental, finance, education and telecommunications sectors. Meanwhile, investment – in both directions – has also been on the rise. As of August 2005, Australia had 7145 investment projects in China with an accumulated value of US$4.35bn, while China had 264 investment projects in Australia with an accumulated value of US$713m. Negotiations are currently under way for a China- Australia Free Trade Agreement that is likely to provide still more possibilities in the trading relationship between the two countries.
The Chinese and Australian economies are highly complementary and there is strong potential for development. There is great growth impetus in the Chinese economy, with large market, plentiful labour forces, and low production costs – providing Australian enterprises with more and more opportunities. Chinese textiles and ready-made garments, computers, home electronics and labour-intensive agricultural products have been widely received in the Australian market. The prosperous Australian economy is rich with resources and its landintensive agricultural products are highly competitive in the Chinese market. Australia has gained cutting-edge capabilities in the development of ‘black box’ flight data recorders, atomic absorption spectrophotometers and the ‘bionic’ ear, in aviation, medicine, information sciences, telecommunications, mining, agriculture, environmental sciences and multimedia.
Unprecedented promise can be seen in China- Australia trade cooperation, with bilateral demand increasing and mutual benefit enlarging. This inaugural issue of China Australia Business goes to show how much both countries are committed to deepening mutual ties. I greatly appreciate the efforts of the Australia China Business Council, and trust that this publication will be a great bridge between the two nations. It will be a valuable resource in unlocking mutual possibilities and will take Sino-Australian ties to the next level.
