The future is bright for business and partnership
between the British and New Zealand markets.
New Zealands relationship with the United Kingdom
has an enduring closeness and strength arising from the historical
connection, shared traditions and values, and long-standing family,
business, cultural, and friendship links.
There are very significant trade and investment flows
between our two countries. As an individual market Britain remains
New Zealands fourth largest trade partner overall with two-way
trade exceeding NZ$2.7bn in the year to June 2001. In that period,
exports to Britain amounted to NZ$1.5bn and imports to New Zealand
were NZ$1.19bn.

Britain is a key supporter of New Zealand at the
European Union where our trade access issues are aired. Taken as
a whole, the European Union is New Zealands second largest
economic partner in terms of trade and investment. Just as Britain
is essential for New Zealand companies operating in Europe, so do
we provide a base for British companies seeking a springboard for
growth into Asia-Pacific markets.
An open economy
The New Zealand Government is committed to reducing trade barriers
and promoting open access to international markets. Our future trade
prospects are bright. The New Zealand economy is experiencing substantial,
export-led economic growth. We have high-quality, innovative products,
and a determination to succeed.
Partnership and opportunity
The year 2002 edition of British Australasian Business is a valuable
resource for finding partners and business opportunities in the
British and Australasian markets. The prospects are good for increased
growth in those relationships, and my government looks forward to
supporting that process.

The Rt. Hon. Helen Clark,
Prime Minister,
New Zealand
