Australia’s international energy services company

Knowledge + Skills + Experience = Successful Projects
Pacific Power International (PPI) has provided power engineering management and consulting services to the electricity industry for over 50 years.

PPI applies the knowledge and skills it has developed to provide technical leadership and project management to clients in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

PPI’s clients are typically owners or developers of major power generation or industrial assets. They are looking for improved performance and reliable operation of their existing plant or they have new projects that they want delivered with certainty.

These customers come to PPI because they recognise its capability to deliver:

  • Projects and contracts with a high degree of certainty and/or independence
  • Owner’s engineer services for the management of power projects to ensure they meet clients’ needs
  • Operation and maintenance of plant to achieve a high degree of reliability
  • Training of power utility managers and workers based on proven experience
  • Independent audits for bankers or statutory compliance provided with independence and the highest levels of integrity
  • Design and analysis of plant systems providing a high degree of integration and functionality.

Power Project Development
Pacific Power International offers design, construction, operation and maintenance services to developers and owners of power assets in Australia and Asia.

PPI, as part of a consortium, has provided the management, lead technical role and supplied balance of plant for a new super-critical coal fired 2 x 420MW power station at Callide in Queensland. PPI is providing a similar role for the 450MW Tarong North power station, currently under construction, which is also located in Queensland.

In Vietnam, PPI is a partner in the owner’s engineer role for two important new power projects at Pha Lai No 2 (2 x 300MW main picture) and Uong Bi (1 x 300MW unit extension).

PPI is also providing technical leadership and supervision for renewable energy projects in Australia. Recent PPI wind projects include the 5MW Crookwell wind farm and the 10MW Blayney wind farm, both located in New South Wales.

Recent PPI hydro power projects include the redevelopment of Burrinjuck Power Station which involved the installation of a new 15MW hydro turbine-generator and refurbishment of the existing 2 x 5.4MW generators. In a similar role PPI has increased the capacity of Hume Power Station from 50MW to 58MW.

Asset Management Services
PPI has developed extensive asset management services through many years of operational experience in the Australian power industry.

Against international competition, PPI won along-term contract for the provision of operations and maintenance services to Collie Power Station in Western Australia.

In Australia’s Northern Territory PPI is the contractor to the Power and Water Authority for provision of training and competency assessment for its staff.

In Asia PPI has provided operator and management training for seven of China’s 600MW coal fired power stations.

Clients come to PPI for the provision of plant condition assessment and monitoring, asset management planning and technical services throughout Australia and in Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and China.

Looking ahead, PPI estimates that by the year 2008, most power stations in south eastern Australia will be over 25 years old.

PPI is able to offer plant improvement and life extension services to these and other older stations throughout the region maximising the value and flexibility of the assets.

Expert Consultancies
As an expert consultant, PPI has been privileged to provide China with its first comprehensive performance improvement study of a coal fired power station.

The efficiency and environmental improvements recommended by PPI had a project pay back period of 2 years and were quickly embraced and implemented by the Banshan Power Station in Zhejiang province. In this same province, PPI in partnership with TransGrid was the designer of China’s first real time competitive power market, which is providing invaluable experience for the design of China’s national market.

Closer to home, PPI provides specialist engineering and environmental consultancy services to Australian power stations. In New South Wales, PPI was recently responsible for the design, supply, installation, configuration and commissioning of the Man Machine Interface Facility for the Bayswater (4 x 660MW) power station. This work centralised plant control functions and reduced the operating costs of the station.

PPI is regularly engaged by asset owners to provide plant failure analysis, advanced computer analysis of key stress components and integrated solutions for plant improvement. These services provide plant owners and operators with independent and expert advice on which to base management decisions.
