P&O Ports is a major service provider of container handling, logistics management, automotive, general and bulk product handling throughout Australia and New Zealand with operations in over 30 ports. P&O’s reputation in the industry as a global leader reflects its commitment to providing “end to end”, cost effective, reliable solutions for all of its operations and services.
P&O’s container handling services are based on a high level of commitment to operational efficiency to ensure that vessel schedule intensity is maintained through constant improvements and upgrades of technology, resources and infrastructure.
2005 sees the commitment of a new ten-year development plan, committing over $500 million into the four Australian container terminals in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle as the next plan in terminal development in Australia. Three state of the art Post-Panamax quay cranes were delivered to the terminals in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with a further 12 scheduled for delivery over the next five years which includes replacement cranes and new cranes to meet the increased vessel requirements for height and reach. These development plans are designed to ensure that P&O Ports stays ahead of demand.
Complimentary to P&O’s container terminal facilities are the modern, adjacent facilities for warehousing, container storage, pack, unpack, quarantine and handling provided by P&O Trans Australia.
P&O’s automotive service standards have been established through the close working relationships that have been built with its customers. P&O’s belief in specialised servicing ensures that a dedicated labour force is provided for each operation, aligning specific operational positions and procedures closely with the specific vessel characteristics and requirements of the cargo. This consideration together with P&O’ s resolve on continual staff briefing at key stages of the loading and discharging process, regular auditing and specific training programs, guarantee its commitment to zero damage. Throughout 2004 P&O handled over 300,000 motor vehicles and damages less than .00007%.
P&O’s general stevedoring operations continually strive to find more effective ways of handling complex cargo with a strong focus on risk reduction and safety awareness. P&O’s extensive experience ensures that customer requirements are met, reliably accommodating their varied nature. P&O’s bulk operation is focused on maintaining efficiency whilst ensuring the highest standards of environmental management through compliant equipment and first-rate processes.
During 2004, P&O Ports began the ISIS project, an Integrated Stevedoring and Information System that will deliver technology services to associated businesses in a co-ordinated, consistent and process orientated manner, achieving new levels of resource effectiveness. This system will integrate the global knowledge and experience of the P&O Group operating in 19 countries around the world. The IT team at P&O Ports have also tailor made each feature of the system to best suit the needs and potential requirements of P&O’s customers around the world. ISIS has the ability to integrate all areas of the business and be managed under the one system, where efficiency can be optimised to better meet the daily capacity demand and provide real time, accurate cargo information to customers. The expected implementation date in Australia and New Zealand is 2007.
P&O Ports applies a contemporary response to issues surrounding safety and environment, applying the highest priority to this and all areas of its business. P&O has been industrious in its response to improving safe working through the implementation of detailed safe working practices for every task carried out by P&O Ports.
