Japan

Although Japan’s economy remains sluggish, just scraping into positive growth for 2002, it still accounts for 16% of the world’s GDP, and is a market second in size only to the United States. While the pace of reform has been slow, Japan’s economy is far more open than it was 10 or 15 years ago and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has publicly recognised the value of foreign investment, saying in January 2003 that he hopes to double the balance of foreign investment in Japan during the next five years.
