The World Maritime University is your key to the maritime
world
The World Maritime University (WMU), located in Malmö,
Sweden, was established by the International Maritime Organization in
1983. The university’s mission is to provide advanced maritime education,
training and technical advice to maritime administrations, industry and
educational institutions worldwide, with particular emphasis placed on
the needs of developing countries.
WMU offers specialised postgraduate education, focusing
on shipping management, port management, maritime safety and security,
maritime administration, marine environmental protection, and MET for
instructors and managers within maritime academies. The programmes lead
to the awards of PhD, Master of Science, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate
Certificate. WMU has become a true model of international learning and
collaboration for the benefit of the global maritime community. To date
some 2000 mari-time professionals from 141 countries around the world
have studied full-time for a postgraduate degree at WMU. Graduates have
taken up senior positions in industry and governments around the world.
Research and consultancy
WMU has a substantial programme of research and consultancy, serving clients
such as the EU, IMO, governments, industry and educational institutions.
The university’s consultancy services include a range of short-term
professional upgrading courses in all aspects of the maritime field. So
far, more than 1000 people have attended these courses and seminars. Now
celebrating its 20th anniversary, WMU has developed into a genuine centre
of excellence for maritime education, training and research. Demand for
WMU’s services is steadily increasing (currently applications for
the postgraduate programme at WMU exceed available places by 3:1), and
the quality of its academic programme has been verified by independent
external agents such as the European Association of Universities (CRE).
Thus WMU is well placed to continue serving the international maritime
community in the coming years.
