20/20 Vision
Focused on ocean protection, Kobe University of Mercantile
Marine sets its sights on being a centre of maritime science excellence
Humans have utilised the sea and benefited from
its vast resources since the dawn of man. However, we now have to give
precedence to the protection of the ocean environment in our activities.
This has become a human responsibility, and therefore needs to be addressed
not only through the technology we utilise to protect the ocean, but also
through the social systems and measures we dispense to meet the social
demand. From this point of view, Kobe University of Mercantile Marine
has developed KUMM Vision 21, which is a long-term educational plan for
the university in the 21st century. KUMM Vision 21’s mission is
to train internationally-minded maritime technologists who can also make
a social contribution by preserving and utilising the deep blue ocean.
Laying foundations
In order to accomplish its mission, KUMM is now pursuing the relevant
educational reforms. Specifically, it has improved the quality of liberal
arts and basic education, including cross-cultural communication, and
has developed hands-on training programmes and international internship
programmes through which the university trains globally-minded technologists.
KUMM is also reforming the educational/research fields
and rebuilding the educational/research institution where it could pursue
the management and planning sciences of maritime technologies and policies.
It is expected that the above reforms of educational and research systems
will significantly enhance the educational quality of the faculty of maritime
science, and help KUMM take another step towards being the centre of excellence
in maritime science.
Excellent facilities
Faculty members at KUMM range from science and engineering to social sciences.
The average number of students per faculty member is 8.8, which makes
it possible to educate students in small numbers, and to do advanced research
in maritime studies. KUMM has excellent facilities for studies, including
a computer network system, satellite education system, training vessels,
towing tank and two research centres. It has undergraduate and graduate
courses in three major fields of studies – Maritime Technology Management,
Maritime Transportation Systems, and Marine Engineering.
