Sea-Nine® 211
Environmental acceptability and performance combine in
the antifouling paints based on Rohm and Haas’ SEA-NINE® 211
The Rohm and Haas Company has developed a metal-free
organic antifouling product called SEA-NINE® 211 antifouling agent,
that is an excellent alternative to TBT-based products. The active ingredient,
4,5-dichloro-2-N-n-octyl-4- isothiazolin-3-one, is an extension of the
company’s long experience in isothiazolone chemistry.
Long-term performance
SEA-NINE provides excellent broad-spectrum activity when used in combination
with cuprous oxide against the entire range of biofouling organisms. This
long-term performance has been confirmed in many years of commercial use
on different vessels. Major paint manufacturers have already invested
substantially in programmes to develop antifouling paints based on SEA-NINE,
several of which are already commercially available. This demonstrates
both their commitment towards the environment and their trust in the capabilities
of SEA-NINE to provide cost-effective antifouling performance while withstanding
the ever-tightening environmental scrutiny necessary to protect the world’s
oceans.
Global acceptance
In recognition of the environmental safety of SEA-NINE 211, the product
has been awarded the prestigious US Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge
Award. The Green Chemistry Challenge Awards Program was established by
an alliance of the chemical industry and the United States EPA to recognise
and promote fundamental breakthroughs in chemistry that accomplish pollution
prevention through source reduction and are useful to industry.
SEA-NINE 211 antifouling agent was recognised as being an effective and
more environmentally-acceptable ingredient for use in marine antifouling
paints compared with many currently-used biocides.
Beneficial characteristics
SEA-NINE 211 represents a significant ecological advance for marine antifoulants
and is an environmentally-preferable alternative, having the following
beneficial environmental characteristics:
- biodegrades extremely rapidly under environmental conditions;
- binds tightly to sediment, limiting bioavailability;
- does not bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms; and
- unlike current antifouling compounds, SEA-NINE is not a chronic toxicant.
Global registrations
SEA-NINE 211 now has a unique set of global registrations, which confirms
its environmental compatibility and allows its use in IMO-2003-compliant
marine antifouling paints in many regions, such as the USA, Japan, the
United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia and Singapore.
Global registrations
Not only do environmentally preferable alternatives such as SEA-NINE 211
antifouling agent provide superior environmental characteristics compared
with TBT-based coatings, but the second generation of tin-free coatings
also provides the environmentally-conscious shipowner with a cost-efficient
alternative for protecting his ships from fouling.
A complete financial evaluation of using an antifouling
coating, including the cost of the paint, cost of dry docking, cost of
fuel, cost of anti-foulant disposal and cost to the marine environment,
clearly demonstrates that environmentally-preferable alternatives such
as SEA-NINE 211 have a financial advantage and are a sound investment.
